Holiday Gift Shopping Timeline: When to Order What
A simple countdown so nothing arrives late. Exact cutoff dates vary by retailer and carrier every year, so always confirm theirs.
Every year, retailers and carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx) publish their own holiday shipping cutoff dates, usually in the fall. Those dates change every year, so treat this as a planning framework and always confirm the cutoff on the retailer's or carrier's site before you order.
8+ weeks before: make the list
- Write down everyone you're buying for and set a total budget (see gift ideas by budget).
- Ask for wish lists early, especially from kids and teens; trending toys can sell out.
- Order anything handmade or custom from small makers now.
6 weeks before: big-ticket and trending items
- Buy tech, popular toys and anything that's been selling out.
- Watch for major sale events and use a discount calculator to check real savings.
4 weeks before: personalized and print-on-demand
- Order personalized items (names, photos, monograms). They're made to order, so production plus shipping takes longer than in-stock items.
- Order matching family outfits for holiday photos now. Browse our shop's Christmas collection.
2–3 weeks before: standard shipping cutoff zone
- Most retailers' standard-shipping holiday cutoffs land around here. Check each one.
- Ship gifts you're mailing to family across the country.
1 week before: expedited shipping and pickup
- Use expedited or same-day shipping where it's offered, or choose in-store pickup.
- Prioritize items that are "in stock" with a delivery date shown at checkout.
Last minute: gifts that can't be late
- Digital gift cards, e-books, subscriptions and experience gifts can be sent instantly.
- Print a "coming soon" card with a photo of the gift if it'll arrive after the holiday.
After the holidays
- Keep gift receipts and check each retailer's holiday return window, which is often extended.
- Note what worked for next year's list.
